aiga y13 conference
Since 1995 San Diego’s local AIGA chapter has produced a design conference. Aptly named The Y Conference, 2008’s Y13 theme, “Seeds of Change”, addressed many sustainability issues confronting the design industry. Two days of presentations and workshops focused on the practice of sustainability, and speakers from the field of biomimicry, architecture, publishing, education, fashion, transportation and design were invited. StudioConover participated in the imagineering and coordination including design and production of all conference marketing components.

Respecting the conference’s theme, all the marketing materials produced were designed to minimally impact the event. Y13 calculated and credited its carbon offset, used recycled materials for stage props, produced invitations on grow-a-note seed paper and recycled all workshop signage into commemorative books. And, the promotional materials that invariably remain at the end of each conference were returned. Every conference interaction was debated and strategized to address the conference’s goals and everyone in attendance departed with greater knowledge for how they too could address their own conservation efforts in context. By presenting a wide array of viewpoints regarding the issue of sustainability while minimizing the conference’s impact, AIGA San Diego learned that future events could produce a reduced environmental impact while yielding maximum promotion.
